 Abstract

The study is based on the Indian stock market with respect to momentum and contrarian strategies using the daily adjusted closing prices of ten sectoral indices of Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE) for a period of six financial years. The sectoral indices were examined on the notion that the test outcome will give an obvious picture on the investment strategies to be adopted with stocks of various sectors. The study has been divided into short and long-term periods and every period has been additionally isolated into formation(arrangement) and holding(trial) periods. The variation of the average abnormal returns of winner and loser portfolio has been examined. In view of the year to year return information of BSE, it was found that majority of the sectoral portfolios follows contrarian investment movement and this evidence questions presence of weak form of Efficient Market Hypothesis in Indian market. The investigation is valuable to investors who have pre-determined investment horizons. The findings also have real ramifications for portfolio management strategies.

 Abstract

As the startup era has emerged in India, it has evidently become a source of employment to a huge population. Among the many myths that control the beliefs of our country, it is believed large industries provide better employment options whereas, as per statistics an approximation of 12 crore people bases their livelihood on these small-scale units and enterprises. These small-scale industries and startups play a major role in increasing the living standards of our population especially rural India. Further studies have shown how with the right aid and resources these MSMEs can add value to the economic conditions of our country. Various policies have been brought in by the current government to encourage these MSMEs, and MUDRA (Micro units Development and Refinance Agency) is another milestone to ensure that these units are provided with the sufficient funds required to fund these units. Hence, this paper mainly focuses on the importance and the need to utilize the benefits of this policy specifically in Karnataka. In this paper we accentuate that these facilities are available and are accessible at any bank to provide financial aid to the unskilled and uneducated population.

 Abstract

India witnessed the demonetization of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 notes on the 8th of November, 2016. Demonetization is the act of stripping a currency unit of its status as legal tender. Demonetization affected the Indian economy and its different sectors in varied ways. It led to the boom of certain industries while others suffered a downfall. This paper intends to study the impact of demonetization on the banking sector. The paper focuses on analyzing the impact of demonetization on the returns of private and public sector banks. The study is conducted by comparing the abnormal returns of banks from both the sectors over a period of 10 days prior to demonetization and 10 days post demonetization.

 Abstract

A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it. This paper aims to establish causality between a banking crisis and a currency crisis and the extent to which both can be correlated. It specifically focuses on the recent Punjab National Bank scam associating it with the downfall in rupee against the USD. The paper initially studies the aforesaid events individually analyzing their footing and later studying them in unison. During the casualty study, we used the USD INR exchange rate and the stock prices of the PNB bank to study the hypothecated relationship between them. We obtained the currency exchange rates of 60 days pre and post the said scam and the stock prices of the PNB (PNBK) for the same period. On utilization of the statistical tools on the collected variables, it is found that there is a significant relationship between the two. As the scam unearthed, the stock prices of the bank fell whereas the exchange rate rose to beat the previous highs by significant margins. There are many other factors which drive the currency rate fluctuations but the banking sector of an economy is arguably at the center of it. It is quite basic to infer that a significant event of such magnitude in one of the leading private sector banks might have an adverse effect on the currency rates as a considerable part of the banks balance sheet constitutes foreign assets and liabilities.

 Abstract

In this paper, we have studied the basics of forensic accounting and the overview of various forensic accounting techniques. One among the techniques, Beneish M-Score model has been used for finding earnings manipulation in 10 foreign companies and 10 Indian companies in the past five years which have been selected on the assumption that the company is involved in manipulative activities in any particular financial year. The results from such analysis have been categorised into manipulative and non-manipulative companies. For proving the manipulative results, complaints and enforcements against the companies have been collected and provided as evidence for such manipulative results. The paper concludes by stating the uses of incorporating forensic accounting into the internal and statutory audit functions and procedures to avoid frauds or manipulations, and suggestions have been made to improve transparency and accountability of all the manipulations in India.
